A motorised boat will take us to the Goddess Isis Temple on the island of Philae. This sacred complex was dedicated to the Goddess Isis and reflects a fusion of three great civilisations — Egyptian, Greek and Roman. The temple was dismantled, and then painstakingly reassembled when the Aswan High Dam was constructed. We will visit both the high dam and the old Aswan Dam, Overnight on board the Grand Mandarin.
Day 5: Sail to Kom-Ombo & Edfu. Breakfast on board as we sail to Kom-Ombo, what a luxurious way to begin your day. Here you will find the mummified remains of several crocodiles. We head back to our boat for lunch as we sail to Edfu taking in the majesty of the River Nile. Dinner and overnight on board the Grand Mandarin.
Day 6: Edfu / Esna / Luxor
Once we have luxuriated over breakfast, our next temple will hold you spellbound – the Temple of Horus (the falcon god of the sky in ancient Egypt). This stunning structure is a well-preserved and colourful one. It reveals what temple worship in ancient Egypt was like. Make sure your camera card has plenty of space to record this historical pyramid. Built between 237 BC and 57 BC by the Ptolemaic dynasty, it was hidden under desert sands and silt for centuries. Back on board your Nile cruise in time for lunch. Your Nile cruise is sailing to Esna and will cross the lock to continue sailing to Luxor. Sip a cocktail as you watch the sunset and marvel at the ancient landscape rolling by. Dinner and overnight on board. Take time to read, take in the view and listen to your guide tell stories of an era long gone.
Day 7: Luxor / Hurghada (full day guided tour of Luxor) Following breakfast, you will have a full day guided tour of the necropolis of Thebes. The Theban Necropolis is a vast complex of ancient Egyptian tombs and mortuary temples located on the west bank of the Nile River, opposite modern-day Luxor (ancient Thebes). Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it served as the primary burial ground for pharaohs, nobility, and high officials during the Middle and New Kingdoms. The Colossi of Memnon is also on the agenda, two large stone statues of the Pharoah Amenhotep III. They stand at the front of the ruined Mortuary Temple, the largest in the Theban Necropolis. They have stood since 1350 BC and were well known to Ancient Greeks and Romans and Egyptologists. The statues contain 107 Roman Era inscriptions in Greek and Latin dating from AD 20 and 250.Here you will also find the Valley of the Kings. Hidden in a remote desert valley, this area contains the rock-cut tombs of New Kingdom pharaohs, including the famous intact tomb of Tutankhamun and the sprawling tomb of Seti I. The Valley of the Queens is the designated burial site for royal wives, princes, and princesses, famous for the exquisitely painted tomb of Queen Nefertari while Mortuary Temples include Massive shrines built to honor the pharaohs and serve as sites for posthumous worship. One such tomb is the Temple of Hatshepsut.
After the tour you will dine at a fantastic restaurant on the west bank of the Nile for lunch before continuing the tour to uncover the treasures of the east bank of the Nile; at Luxor and Karnak temples.
